Brian Branch made an offensive gesture during last week's game against the Green Bay Packers. Now, he has to pay a hefty amount for his actions.
Shortly after being ejected for a helmet-to-helmet hit on wide receiver Bo Melton, the Detroit Lions safety made a double middle-finger gesture toward the cheering crowd at Lambeau Field. On Saturday, the league office announced that he would be fined $20,256, or $10,128 for each contemptible act:
The gesture has since become viral, with fellow safety Kerby Joseph distributing shirts with the gesture on them ahead of the Week 10 game against the Houston Texans.
Brian Branch has apologized for helmet-to-helmet hit, gesture
Brian Branch has since expressed regret over the incident. Speaking to the press during Wednesday's practice, he said:
"That's not something I wanted to show or want people to notice me as that. That was just the heat of the moment for me, and I apologize to everyone who seen that and that won't happen again."
He also expressed his agreement with his ejection:
"My target was obviously high, but that was never my intentions to aim for the head. Moving forward I do have to move my target down."
Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has had nothing but praise for Branch and Kerby Joseph, especially after the two worked together on pressuring and intercepting Jordan Love:
“Those two guys are doing a hell of a job for us, and the thing is, they're not even close to where they're going to be. And, when I talk about that, that's just understanding the game as they get older and understanding the things we're trying to do with them technically, that they have to do a better job at.”
The game between the Texans (6-3) and Lions (7-1) kicks off on Sunday at 8:20 PM ET on NBC.
