The San Francisco 49ers listed their All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey as inactive for the Monday Night Football clash against the New York Jets. The team announced the surprise news hours before the kick off, leaving fans and fantasy managers crushed.
The reasons McCaffrey is not playing today is because the running back is dealing with a calf and an Achilles injury. The reports initially suggested McCaffrey will be ready to lace up tp play against New York in San Francisco's season opener.
McCaffrey's absense is a massive setback for the 49ers, who will be going up against a top-10 Jets defense. The 3x Pro Bowler has been the leader of this offense. Missing him for a huge clash against the Jets, to kick off the season, will not be an ideal way to set the tone starting this year and could influence the result of the game.
McCaffrey was a limited participant in training during the week. However, 49ers general manager John Lynch said he expects last year's Offensive Player of the Year to feature against the Jets in Week 1.
"Christian's doing great," Lynch said on KNBR's Murph & Markus on Friday. "We got to finish the week here, but he looks like Christian -- and that's a good thing for us. He's looked like Christian out here at practice. We had a bonus practice because of the Monday night [game] and he was there. He was out there yesterday.
"So, Christian's looking really good. Obviously, we want to see him progress through the week, but we had confidence that Christian would be ready, and he's doing very well. He takes tremendous care of his body and takes so much pride in that. He'll be out there and ready to roll."
McCaffrey racked up a league-high 1,459 rushing yards and 14 scores last season. He also posted 564 yards on 67 receptions and caught seven touchdowns across 16 regular season games, helping the 49ers clinch the top seed in the NFC.
In the playoffs, McCaffrey recorded 420 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns as San Francisco reached the Super Bowl, but lost against the Kanas City Chiefs at the final hurdle.
McCaffrey has forged an excellent partnership with quarterback Brock Purdy and the duo will be integral to San Francisco's success this season.
