Is Deebo Samuel playing today? Latest on 49ers WR for Week 4 game vs Patriots

The San Francisco 49ers have been dealing with many problems to start their season. After an offseason where Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams did not practice due to their contract situations, the team started slowly and has been hit with many injuries.

One of those players has been wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who started the season hot but suffered a calf injury before Week 3 that left him out of the game against the Los Angeles Rams. But things could be improving for the team.

According to reports from Jordan Schultz and Adam Schefter, Samuel is expected to play against the New England Patriots, which would represent a major boost for an offense where Christian McCaffrey is already out and Brandon Aiyuk looks out of shape following his holdout.

Deebo also had contract problems with San Francisco

Samuel's importance in 2024 grew because Aiyuk held out from practices and Kittle is now injured as well. Fans also went through Samuel's contract saga in 2022, where he made it clear that he wanted to be traded from the team.

At the end of the day, he signed a three-year, $72 million extension that kept him with Kyle Shanahan, the guy who knows the most about using his talents. Aiyuk overtook him as WR1 for the 49ers, though.

While he feels a bit expensive now, money is available for the franchise because Brock Purdy remains in his rookie contract, meaning there's a lot of cap space available to other positions, such as wide receiver.

When will Brock Purdy sign a contract extension with the 49ers?

As part of the 2011 CBA terms which remained for the new 10-year agreement signed in 2020, a team can't sign a drafted player to a contract extension until after three years in the league.

While Brock Purdy will certainly earn a huge amount of money once he signs the paper, neither party can agree to an extension until after the end of this season. It's great news for the 49ers, who can keep their superstar quarterback around for a small amount in the salary cap.
