Drake Maye is expected to be the new face of the New England Patriots after being drafted third overall in April. In the preseason, he saw limited snaps in the opener against the Carolina Panthers, completing two passes for 19 yards. In Week 2, he completed six of 11 attempts for 47 yards.
But will that pattern change in the finale at the Washington Commanders?

Is Drake Maye playing today?
Week 3 against the Commanders will follow the same pattern of veteran Jacoby Brissett starting over Drake Maye. Head coach Jerod Mayo announced on Friday that the first-rounder will come off the bench again as Brissett takes the first snaps, with fellow rookie Joe Milton and Bailey Zappe to follow him.

Rookies starting in at least Week 1 of any given season have been commonplace lately. For 2024, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels will lead the Chicago Bears and Commanders, respectively (though the former did not see the field on Thursday, and neither will the latter this Sunday).
This especially rings true in the preseason, where a devastating injury can derail a team's long-term plans for a quarterback. The Minnesota Vikings had to pay the price when JJ McCarthy tore his ACL earlier this month, ruling him out for the season.
