Jayden Daniels would be potentially remembered as the man who saved the Washington Commanders from their days of mediocrity during Dan Snyder's ownership.

In just ten games in 2024, he has helped them to one of their best starts ever, going 7-3 as a rookie starter, setting records and making big plays like the 'Madhouse in Maryland.'

But on Thursday, he faced his biggest challenge yet, the Philadelphia Eagles, who were entering the matchup on a five-game win streak coming off their bye week. Was he able to lead his team to victory and the NFC East lead?

Jayden Daniels stats vs. Eagles

These are the stats that Daniels posted on Thursday:

  • Completions:8/13
  • Passing yards: 83
  • Passing touchdowns: 0
  • Interceptions: 0
  • Sacks taken: 2
  • Passer rating: 80.0
  • Rushing attempts: 3
  • Rushing yards: 8
  • Rushing touchdowns: 0

In a game that showcased a balanced offensive mix, the Commanders’ uber-rookie quarterback employed an unusual passing distribution, with running back Austin Ekeler catching most of the balls in some sort of “slot receiver” role - eight for 89 yards to be exact.

His next-best receiver was Zach Ertz, who had six for 47 and the night’s only passing touchdown - which came late in the game with the team down 10-26 - as well as a two-point attempt.

But in retrospect, two plays will haunt him. First is the ill-fated rushing attempt on fourth down, deep in enemy territory. Rather than content himself with a field goal that would have retaken the lead, Dan Quinn decided to go for it. Daniels was then swarmed by Zack Baun and Reed Blankenship, causing a turnover.

The other is Blankenship’s interception, which occurred after the Eagles turned said turnover into a Saquon Barkley touchdown. The safety moved himself well ahead of intended target Noah Brown to kill the drive - and then Barkley scored again for the aforementioned lead. That would need the Commanders to go touchdown>two-pointer>onside kick>touchdown>two-pointer to tie the game, but Dallas Goedert recovered the onside kick to seal the game.
