Jimmy Garoppolo vs. Derek Carr: who is the better QB? Delving into the pair's stats so far

Who is better between Jimmy G and Derek Carr?

At the end of the last season, the Las Vegas Raiders released their longest-serving QB, Derek Carr. Recently, they signed two-time Super Bowl winner Jimmy Garoppolo.

A casual NFL fan could be forgiven for thinking that the Raiders just made an upgrade at their problem position, but observant analysts would beg to differ. The Las Vegas Raiders might have just made a downgrade at the shot caller position, but Josh McDaniels doesn't even know it.

Men lie, women lie, but numbers do not lie, and Derek Carr's NFL numbers are significantly better than Jimmy Garoppolo's. The only people who think otherwise work at the Las Vegas Raiders' front office.

Derek Carr has more Pro Bowl selections than Jimmy Garoppolo. The Fresno State University alum has four Pro Bowl nods compared to the East Illinois University alum's zero.

Also, Carr has four 4000+ yard seasons compared to Jimmy G's zero. Both players are 31, so your age argument is virtually nonexistent. The only plus Garoppolo has over Carr is his Super Bowl resume, and Jimmy G didn't even play a snap in either of his Super Bowl wins.

All eyes will be on the Las Vegas Raiders' new franchise QB as he looks to rewrite his legacy and prove that he is a better quarterback than the new starter in New Orleans.

Derek Carr's NFL timeline and stats

Derek Carr was drafted by the then-Oakland Raiders as a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Carr was drafted out of Fresno State University, a school more famous for their receivers than shot callers.

Carr became the Day 1 QB1 upon entering the NFL and remained as such throughout his tenure in Las Vegas. He was a regular-season QB, as he always posted solid numbers in the regular season but never got going during the postseason.

The Las Vegas Raiders traded in Derek Carr's close friend and former Fresno State teammate, Davante Adams, believing it would help them go on a postseason run. Unfortunately, that was not the case, as Carr had arguably the worst season of his NFL career.

Eventually, Carr was released by the Raiders at the end of the 2022 NFL season, thus bringing an end to his nine-year spell with the team. He ended his Raiders' career with a stat line of 35,222 passing yards, 217 touchdowns, and 99 interceptions. He appeared in 142 games for the franchise. Carr will spend his next season or three as the starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints.

Jimmy Garoppolo's NFL timeline and stats

Jimmy Garoppolo was drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The Patriots drafted Jimmy G as the long-term replacement for Tom Brady, who they felt was on his last legs (that didn't age well).

Due to Tom Brady's evergreen play, Garoppolo couldn't wrestle away the QB1 slot in New England. He was also forced to accept a backup role for the Patriots during his three-year spell there. At least he earned two Super Bowl rings as a backup.

Jimmy Garoppolo was traded by the Patriots to the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the 2017 NFL season. This gave him his chance to be an undisputed NFL starter for the first time.

He had a decent career in San Francisco, even though he never fulfilled his potential due to various ill-timed injuries. Jimmy Garoppolo was released by the 49ers at the end of the 2022 NFL season, as the franchise decided to place their trust in younger QBs, Brock Purdy and Trey Lance.

At the moment, Jimmy Garoppolo has put up an NFL career stat line of 14,289 passing yards, 87 touchdowns, and 42 interceptions. He will spend his next couple of seasons as a member of the Las Vegas Raiders.
