Jonathan Taylor serves as the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts and is a key component of Shane Steichen's offense. Taylor is a 2021 Pro Bowler and one of the most efficient running backs in the NFL when healthy.
Let's look into Taylor's availability ahead of the Colts' Week 6 game against the Tennessee Titans.
Jonathan Taylor's injury update
Taylor suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the Indianapolis' 27-24 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 29. The 2021 rushing yards and touchdowns leader had 21 carries for 88 rushing yards, scoring his only touchdown of the game on the Colts' opening drive. He has not played since.
According to USA Today, the Colts are taking a day-to-day approach with Taylor. He did not practice on Wednesday, but Coach Steichen told reporters that his injury wasn't any more serious than expected.
Jonathan Taylor didn't participate in practice last week as well, but he told reporters what he needed to do before returning to the Gridiron. He said:
"Really being able to move around. Really being able to get in and out of cuts, being able to explode, burst because, especially at my position, those are all significant cutting positions. So that is the biggest thing.”
Who could replace Jonathan Taylor?
There are three running backs on the active Indianapolis Colts squad at the moment. They are Taylor, Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson.
Sermon stepped in during the game against the Steelers when it was clear that Taylor couldn't continue. Ideally, he is expected to take the lead until Taylor fully recovers, but he is dealing with a collarbone injury. He did not participate in Wednesday's practice session, and it remains to be seen whether he passes the fitness test ahead of the Colts' contest against Jacksonville.
That leaves Tyler Goodson as the only healthy option at running back. Goodson has been with the Colts since 2023, initially joining as a practice squad member before finding a permanent spot on the main roster. He has a career stat line of 18 carries and 113 rushing yards in 10 games.
