Lamar Jackson has been the face of the Baltimore Ravens for the last five seasons. With the 2022 NFL season, Jackson's contract with the Ravens is also ending. Both sides have been trying to figure out a way since last year to extend their contracts, but have been unsuccessful in reaching out on identical terms.

According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, if the Ravens cannot make a long-term deal with their star QB, then they will place the franchise tag on him. The franchise tag allows each franchise to retain one pending free agent without locking themselves into a long-term deal. The deadline to apply for the franchise tag will close on Tuesday (March 7).

In the five seasons with the Ravens, Lamar Jackson has started in 61 out of the 70 games. He has thrown for 12,209 yards with 101 passing touchdowns and 38 interceptions. Jackson has had a pass completion rate of 63.7 and has a winning record of 45-16-0.

Lamar Jackson has career earnings of $32,774,549 in his five seasons with the Ravens. The franchise drafted him as the 32nd overall in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft.

On June 5, 2018, Jackson signed a $9.47 million deal with the Ravens. On April 27, 2021, Baltimore exercised a $23 million option for the 2022 NFL season. The Ravens and the 26-year-old quarterback have been in talks for a contract extension for the 2023 season, but nothing solid has come out of it.

As the franchise tag deadline approaches, Lamar's future with the Ravens will finally be decided.

What are the two types of franchise tags the Ravens can apply on Lamar Jackson?

There are usually two types of franchise tags that teams can apply to keep a free agent without locking them into a long-term deal. These are Exclusive Tags or Non-Exclusive Tags.

The exclusive tag will prevent Jackson from negotiating with any other teams in free agency. It will cost the Ravens about $45 million in 2023, which is calculated by taking the average of the top five quarterback salaries from the prior five seasons.

Jackson's non-exclusive tag would cost Baltimore $32.4 million in 2023 if it were to be applied. Also, both parties would have until July 17 to come to a long-term agreement.

Lamar Jackson may enter contract talks with another club under a non-exclusive tag, and the Ravens will then have the option of either matching the terms of the deal or trading for Jackson in exchange for two first-round selections.
