Patrick Mahomes, a multiple-time regular-season and Super Bowl MVP is having an uncharacteristic 2024 season. Through 11 games, he is on pace for his lowest passing yardage and has an 18:11 touchdown-to-interception ratio, the worst of his career.
Despite this, his Kansas City Chiefs remain the AFC leaders and were the last undefeated team.
On Monday, two-time league MVP Kurt Warner shared his thoughts on the notion on X.
"I know Patrick Mahomes may not have the stats we have come to know or the O may not be scoring up to expectations, but until you pop on the tape each week and see what exactly he is doing play-to-play, you have no idea how good this guy really is! He continually makes the play in the moment - whether it shows up as impressive in stat book or not!!"
Patrick Mahomes wants dominant wins after Chiefs walk off Panthers
The Chiefs' last game was a rebound of sorts after the loss at the Buffalo Bills, but it did not come easy. Against the lowly Carolina Panthers, they were surprisingly tensely challenged before winning via a field goal by rookie Spencer Shrader as time expired.
It marked their eighth one-score win, tied for most in the first eleven games of a team's season. Besides their two field goal victories, they have also won once each by a blocked field goal, overtime touchdown and opposing receiver stepping out of bounds on a would-be touchdown.
And while Patrick Mahomes is happy with the win, he wants more definitive victories moving forward.
"You want to have some blowouts,'' Mahomes said. "You want to be a little calmer in the fourth quarter. I've always said it can be a good thing as you get to the playoffs and later in the season, just knowing that you've been in those moments before and knowing how to kind of attack it."
Shrader, meanwhile, relished the opportunity to contribute to a win.
"I knew that I'd be getting an opportunity, so I just tried to stay calm, understanding that it was going to come at some point,'' Shrader said. "Then when it did come I was ready."
The Chiefs next host the Raiders on Black Friday. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime.
