Running back Nick Chubb played for the Cleveland Browns for the first seven years of his career after entering the league as a second-round pick in 2018. However, after two consecutive injury-ridden seasons, the team decided against keeping him this offseason.
Chubb signed with the Houston Texans on a one-year contract worth $2.5 million eight days ago, ending his chapter in Cleveland.

According to Cleveland Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot, Chubb's departure may not be the last time we see him with the Browns.

"There's definitely a chance the Browns will work something out with Nick Chubb down the road, even if he signs just to retire as a Brown," Cabot said via Cleveland.com. "I absolutely think this should and will happen. Based on Chubb’s heartfelt thank you to Browns fans, I truly believe he’ll be open to it and will want it as much as the Browns and their fans do.”
“He deserves a chance to play, and now he has that in Houston. But it can’t end this way. He needs to retire as a Browns when he’s ready, and then go into their Ring of Honor,” she added.
Following his move to the Texans, Chubb wrote an emotional letter to Browns supporters thanking them for their support over the years. Cabot believes this message suggests that if he performs well in Houston, he will return to Cleveland for another spell.
The Browns may also ceremoniously invite the four-time Pro Bowler to complete his career as a club legend, even if injuries continue to hinder him, according to Cabot.
Chubb was one of the best rushers in the NFL at some point during his time with the Browns. His incredible play helped him climb up in some categories in the team's record books. He is third in the team's rushing yard record with 6,843 yards, second among players to have recorded the most 100-yard rushing games for the club (30 games) and his 51 rushing touchdowns rank third in team history.
To cover for Chubb's departure, the Browns added Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson to their running back group through the NFL Draft, joining Jerome Ford.
Nick Chubb to help Texans rushing game alongside Joe Mixon in 2025
The Texans effectively strengthened their running game and added support for running back Joe Mixon with Nick Chubb's signing.
Chubb will likely be used as a backup option to cover for Mixon in the event of an injury. However, he could play a bigger role as the season goes on, especially as a short-yardage/red-zone power back — something the team sorely needs — if he can regain the production level he displayed before his injury.
At 29, Chubb probably has left little to offer in the long run after two consecutive injury-plagued seasons, but the potential benefits of the deal for Houston are extremely appealing.
The star rusher may be a wise investment for the team and a perfect fit for the new rushing scheme that offensive coordinator Nick Caley will implement this season.
