Six weeks after Aaron Rodgers the New York Jets fired Robert Saleh as coach, the franchise went a step further and sent GM Joe Douglas packing. Former Cleveland Browns GM Phil Savage - senior football advisor with the Jets since 2019 - is serving as the interim GM as the Jets begin their process to hire a full-time replacement for Douglas.

On his Tuesday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show this week, Aaron Rodgers walked fans through the day the Jets fired Douglas. The four-time NFL MVP said:

“There was a helicopter that landed at practice on that Tuesday. I just felt like something crazy was about to go down. Maybe isn’t crazy outside the building, but when the helicopter landed mid-practice…
“When they came on the helicopter, I just knew something might be going down. I was like ‘Damn, I hope it’s not Joe.’"

Aaron Rodgers' Jets hire former GM's company to help replace fired GM

The NFL is an entertaining league on the field, but there has been equal amounts of entertainment off the field as well this year.

Between reports of franchise owner Woody Johnson floating the idea to bench Aaron Rodgers to get a response out of the franchise and rumors of Rodgers refusing to get scanned on lingering injuries, the Jets have had their fair share of fires to put out.

They didn't help themselves this week after they hired The 33rd Team to help them in their quest to hire another general manager.

Per the franchise, Mike Tannenbaum and Rick Spielman will lead the process to replace Joe Douglas. Tannenbaum had served as the Jets' general manager previously. Spielman, meanwhile, worked with the Washington Commanders this offseason to help hire general manager Adam Peters and coach Dan Quinn.

One name who has been frequently mentioned as a candidate to take over is Dawn Aponte, who's currently serving as the NFL's chief administrator of football operations.

Aponte has a history with Tannenbaum, having worked with him with the Jets and the Dolphins. Interestingly, the Los Angeles Chargers interviewed her for the GM role a year ago before eventually choosing Joe Hortiz.
