NFL analyst explains how Patrick Mahomes' $500 million contract might end up being a steal

Patrick Mahomes proved to the world yet again why he's considered the best quarterback currently playing in the NFL. In a stunning display, Mahomes guided the Kansas City Chiefs to a 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII to secure his second Lombardi.

The Chiefs thus far must be happy with the return they've received from their star QB, who they tied down a monster 10-year $500 million contract extension back in 2020. The astronomical amount seemed unheard of back when it was signed, but more and more players seem to be penning down similar extensions these days.

In terms of highest paid quarterbacks on an average yearly salary basis, Mahomes doesn't even feature in the top 3. And this was exactly the point made by NFL analyst Nick Wright while appearing on the Colin Cowherd show:

"He's on average, the fifth highest-paid quarterback in football. When Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, and maybe even Lamar Jackson get new deals, he's only going to go further down that list. He could be the 10th highest-paid guy at his position at the start of next year."

Wright does make a compelling point. The quarterbacks he mentioned are all expected to pen a new deal over the course of the offseason. This would likely see Mahomes fall further down the list of QBs in terms of yearly pay.

Having a QB of his caliber on their roster while paying a fraction of what the league is paying other stars of similar stature would go down as an absolute steal.

Interestingly enough, Peyton Manning, through his production company, Omaha Productions, is listed as a producer for the much-hyped docuseries. The production house is most notably known for overseeing projects such as Manningcast and Peyton's Places, to name a few.
