Bill Belichick and Peyton Manning haven't competed against each other in eight and a half years, but there's no love lost between the legendary head coach and the Hall of Fame quarterback.
The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach joined the former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos superstar and his brother and fellow Hall of Famer Eli Manning on the ManningCast during the Monday Night Football clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints.
Late in the first quarter, the five-time NFL MVP asked Belichick how the Saints could quiet down the raucous crowd inside Arrowhead Stadium. The veteran head coach, infamous for his stoic demeanor, took the opportunity to take a swipe at the retired quarterback and the Colts.
Belichick said:
"Well Peyton, let me tell you. The crowd noise at Arrowhead wasn't as bad as when you guys piped in music at the RCA Dome... Then when the crowd noise skipped, that's how we knew you were pumping it in."
The RCA Dome was the Colts' home stadium for 24 years from 1984 to 2007. The team moved to the Lucas Oil Stadium in 2008.
Manning offered no rebuttal to Belichick's hilarious jibe and could only chuckle.
Bill Belichick vs. Peyton Manning head-to-head record
Despite claiming that the Colts pumped in fake crowd noise to make communication difficult for the Patriots, Belichick and his team had a good record against them at the RCA Dome in the head coach's early years in New England.
He lost his first game in Indianapolis but led the Patriots to a victory on their next two visits. Peyton Manning and the Colts broke the streak with a 38-34 win in the memorable 2006 AFC Championship Game. The home team scored 32 points in the second half to erase an 18-point first-half deficit and advance to the Super Bowl.
In the two team's last meeting at the venue, Belichick and his team won 24-20, ensuring he finished with the upper hand in their head-to-head battles against Manning and the Colts in Indianapolis. Ironically, the Hall of Fame quarterback was more successful against the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach at Lucas Oil Stadium, beating the Patriots both times they faced off at the arena.
Belichick and Manning faced off 20 times in their careers. The two-time Super Bowl champion finished with a dismal 8-12 record against the legendary coach, however, he did beat him in their final head-to-head game in the 2015 AFC Championship Game as a Bronco and went on to win the Super Bowl before retiring.
