Bill Simmons urges Patriots to move on from Bill Belichick highlighting legendary HC's age as key factor

Should Bill Belichick walk away?

Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots have not had a lot of success after Tom Brady's departure. For Bill Simmons, it might be time for the legendary coach to retire.

Belichick is 70 years old, one of the oldest coaches in the league. As the league continues to get younger in that area (thanks to coaches like Mike McDaniel and Sean McVay), Belichick continues to age well past them.

Simmons is a Patriots fan and believes the coach's age has caught up to him, as he said on his podcast:

"It's time, Belichick needs to retire. Yeah. He does. He needs to retire.I went back, I wrote this column in 2006 after the Bill Parcells season when the Cowboys lost and Parcells... remember when he sort of just kinda lost it? It was kinda sad and we were like 'remember when Parcells was an awesome coach, now he's out of it, he's taking pay cheques, doing dumb stuff'."

He added:

"I had this speed limit comparison where I said after coaches hit 50 things start to get dicey. Now people are coaching a little bit older, but him and Pete Carroll are the two oldest coaches in the league."

A lot of criticism has come Belichick's way in the wake of a baffling loss on Sunday.

With the game tied and headed to overtime, Jakobi Meyers inexplicably lateraled the ball way back to Mac Jones, but it was intercepted by Chandler Jones.

Jones ran through the Patriots quarterback for a walk-off touchdown that temporarily moved the Patriots out of the playoffs.

Should they end up missing them entirely, it would be the second time they've done so in three years without Brady. In 2020, they went 7-9 with Cam Newton and are currently 7-7 with Jones and Bailey Zappe.

Is Bill Belichick the oldest coach in the NFL?

Bill Belichick is far older, and also more accomplished, than most of his NFL counterparts. However, he is not quite the oldest coach in the league. He is 70 and Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is 71.

Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs is 64 and is the next oldest coach remaining in the NFL.
