Brandon Aiyuk trade rumors challenged

As Brandon Aiyuk enters the final year of his contract, he is rumored to be on the trade block during the 2024 NFL offseason. Although he has increased his production during his time with the San Francisco 49ers, the franchise may not be able to afford him. As they already pay several of their players top contracts, Aiyuk could be a salary cap casualty.

Among the many theoretical trade scenarios, there was a recent post from the NFL Rumors account on X. The post read:

"Brian Barnwell says a geat trade would be 49ers Brandon Aiyuk to the Chargers for the 5th overall pick and the Niners to pick Marvin Harrison Jr."

The proposed trade makes sense after the Chargers recently parted ways with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. This would suggest they need wide receivers, so a proven weapon like Aiyuk could fill the role. The 49ers would also not have to pay Aiyuk as much as he is likely looking for in a new contract.

The issue with the account's report is that it is inaccurate. ESPN's Bill Barnwell, whom the post likely referred to, responded to the post.

"Not my name," Barnwell tweeted on X. "Not the trade I suggested (missing a bunch of picks, including a first going back to LAC). Didn't mention MHJ being there at five. Besides that, this is great."

Brandon Aiyuk is reportedly seeking a new contract as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. As the San Francisco 49ers likely can't pay him what he wants, many speculated where the wide receiver could end up in a potential trade. Bill Barnwell is one of them, suggesting that a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers could work out for all involved.

In his hypothetical trade, the 49ers would send Aiyuk to the Chargers along with the 31st and 94th pick in the 2024 NFL draft. In return, they would receive the 5th and 181st overall picks. Barnwell then suggested that San Francisco might land Malik Nabers in the first round, not Marvin Harrison Jr.
