The only serious competition he had that year was from Blaine Gabbert, who the Jacksonville Jaguars selected with the tenth overall selection, and Jake Locker, who the Tennessee Titans selected with the eighth overall selection.
Cam Newton’s NFL timeline
Before attending Auburn, Newton played collegiate football for Florida. As a junior, he won the Heisman Award and the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. The Carolina Panthers made him their first-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft.
Newton spent most of his 11 years in the NFL playing with the Panthers. He ranks second in quarterback running yards and first in quarterback rushing touchdowns in the NFL.
Newton guided the Panthers to four postseason berths and three division victories between 2013 and 2017. His most fruitful season was in 2015 when he won the league's regular season MVP and led the Panthers to a Super Bowl berth in Super Bowl 50 with a 15-1 record, the best in team history.
After winning the MVP award, Cam Newton battled with fitness issues, and for the next four years, the Panthers only made the postseason once. Before his tenth NFL season, he was allowed to leave Carolina.
In 2020, Newton was a member of the New England Patriots, but in 2021, the Pats dropped him. Midway through the 2021 season, he rejoined the Panthers but was not re-signed later.
