"Cut him" - 49ers fans far from satisfied with De'Vondre Campbell's 3-game suspension for Antonio Brown stunt

During Thursday Night Football, De'Vondre Campbell refused to play against the Los Angeles Rams in a 12-6 loss for the 49ers. San Francisco, whose playoff chances are hanging by a thread, wasted little time in suspending Campbell for three games.

Following this, the NFL fans had no qualms about venting their opinions. They feel Campbell’s three-game suspension isn’t enough for what the linebacker did.

"Cut him," one NFL fan wrote without hesitance.

Another fan commented:

"They should kick him off the team."

Meanwhile, a third fan noted:

"Quit on his team. This isn't high school. There are financial implications his teammates face."

It happened in the third quarter of the game when 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan approached De’Vondre Campbell and asked him to replace an injured Dre Greenlaw. However, he refused outright. Moreover, he left the field and went to the locker room.

As reported by Bleacher Report, Shanahan has hinted that Campbell’s days in the San Francisco 49ers uniform are likely over and has been "working through the semantics of exactly how to deal with it."

For the NFL fans, it was a déjà vu because De'Vondre Campbell's action was similar to former wide receiver Antonio Brown’s infamous walk-off with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.

De'Vondre Campbell had a respectable career in NFL until now

De’Vondre Campbell signed with the 49ers in March 2024 on a one-year deal. Earlier in the season, he filled in admirably for injured star Dre Greenlaw. However, with Greenlaw’s return in Week 15, Campbell was diminished to a reserve role.

This could have likely led to his frustration during Thursday's game.

With his three-game suspension, Campbell will have to face financial repercussions (potentially forfeiting game checks and facing penalties up to $167,500 from his $3.35 million signing bonus).

But, the damage to his reputation is even costlier. Undeniably, it casts a shadow over his eight-year NFL career.

In the 2016 NFL Draft, De'Vondre Campbell was selected by the Falcons. After three seasons, he joined the Arizona Cardinals. Next, he moved on to the Packers and won his first-team All-Pro honors in 2021. After the Packers released him in 2023, Campbell signed with the 49ers.

Years of hard work and honors were overshadowed by his refusal to step onto the field.

Now, with only three games left in the season, Campbell’s future with the 49ers and the NFL is totally uncertain.

It’s not just about one game. It’s about trust. How can a team rely on a player who isn’t willing to fight for them? What do you think?
