D'Onta Foreman or Chuba Hubbard: Who is a better fantasy pick?

The possibility that D'Onta Foreman or Chuba Hubbard may become viable free-agent acquisitions was always percolating in the background for fantasy football owners.

However, given that Christian McCaffrey has been traded, there is a greater likelihood that one of the Panthers' existing running backs will significantly appreciate in value.

McCaffrey's departure leaves the Panthers with little security at the slot. As a result, the remainder of the year will be spent determining which of their young players and veterans deserve to be on the roster permanently.

The average football fan might not be excited, but fantasy players will undoubtedly be interested in Carolina's strategy.

Since the beginning of the preseason, the argument regarding who applied the handcuffs to McCaffrey has been a fascinating topic of discussion.

Foreman signed a one-year deal this past offseason after showing promise with the Tennessee Titans in 2021. Hubbard, who the Panthers had selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft following a not-so-impressive rookie season, was beginning his second season at the time.

Who is the better fantasy pick between the two?

In 2021, D'Onta Foreman had his best showing while stepping in for Derrick Henry for the Tennessee Titans. He gained 566 yards on the ground and three touchdowns in nine matches while also catching nine passes for 123 yards.

Foreman, 26, hasn't seen many plays this season. He has 12 carries for 37 yards and no receptions.

Chuba Hubbard has six carries for 34 yards and has made more catches in his two years of playing time than Foreman has in his entire six-year career.

It's also important to note that Hubbard, 23, was McCaffrey's main backup last year. On 172 carries, he gained 612 yards and scored five touchdowns.

To decide whether it's worthwhile to retain Hubbard in 2023, the Panthers may want to collect more data on him.

Hubbard has not received many receptions this campaign, similar to D'Onta Foreman. The 23-year-old has only tallied one reception for one receiving yard and six carries for 34 yards.

Chuba Hubbard should still play a significant part in the backfield, even though D'Onta Foreman may receive more work in the early downs. This year, he has taken only one snap less than Foreman.

Chuba Hubbard has been marginally more effective based on the statistics they have so far. He attempts more often, averaging 5.7 yards instead of 3.1 for Foreman. However, the sample size is so small that it is difficult to draw meaningful conclusions from those figures.

If your FAAB budget is limited, Chuba Hubbard is the best choice. In all forms, his ability to see two to three targets in every game offers some value. He is substantially more valuable in PPR than D'Onta Foreman.
