The Atlanta Falcons have cut wide receiver Cameron Batson from their practice squad after his arrest in Georgia. His actions are serious enough that they could lead to 20 years in prison for the player.
As per reports, Cameron Batson has been charged with five different crimes following a DUI stop that devolved into mayhem. He was stopped by the police for failing to maintain a lane and speeding. However, he allegedly became violent with the officer, causing the policeperson to fire a shot. Thankfully, it did not hit anyone.
After the aggressive fracas, the player reportedly managed to escape and make it back into his truck. He then took off, causing the police to give chase. He did not make it far enough and crashed his truck. He escaped the truck and made it away on foot. He was eventually found hiding in the area and arrested.
He is charged with assault, battery, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer while on official duty, removing a weapon from a public official, and driving while fleeing a police officer.
Cameron Batson's history in the NFL so far
Cameron Batson played at Texas Tech in college from 2014 to 2017. He went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft but was picked up by the Tennessee Titans. He remained on the fringes of the first team but was utilized as a punt returner and a wide receiver.
In his four years with the Tennessee Titans, he had 22 receptions for 197 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 19 returns for 315 yards in his career with them. He was out for the entirety of 2019 due to a shoulder injury and only played four games last season before his season ended due to a torn ACL.
He joined the Atlanta Falcons this season but was limited to the practice squad. He signed with them, reuniting with head coach Arthur Smith. Smith was a longtime Titans coach, having worked in various capacities with the franchise since 2011, before taking the Atlanta head coach job in 2022.
Cameron Batson's career needed a boost after stalling in Tennessee, and that should have been it. However, this has not gone as planned, which is especially surprising given his lack of a history of serious legal problems.
Given his most recent incident and potential prison time, it's difficult to see him ever playing in the NFL again.
