Geno Smith reveals how Floyd Mayweather's words inspired him to fairytale comeback

Geno Smith had a Cinderella-like story in the season he had with the Seattle Seahawks. Smith started his first season in the NFL since 2014 and set career-highs in every major QB category.

Smith joined The Pivot Podcast with former NFL players Channing Crowder, Fred Taylor, and Ryan Clark. He revealed to the former players how he got inspiration from one of the greatest boxers of all-time - Floyd Mayweather Jr. - when he was checking up on Antonio Brown.

"I was actually, you know, AB's my boy, you know, AB [Antonio Brown]. And, you know, he and Floyd, we're kind of hanging out. And so I was just doing a checkup on AB, you know, make sure he was straight. And so, you know, Floyd was there. We kind of got to talking. And, you know, he said a lot of great things."

He noted how Mayweather reminded him that he got into the game to provide for his family.

"But I think one of the things that really stuck with me was, it was like, 'Hey G Man, I don't remember why you got into the game. You know, to take care of your family. You know, because we were just talking, I was like, man, you know, it's kind of messed up, and I finally got an opportunity. But man, you know, I've been ready for all these years. And he's like, man, hey, who cares?"

He continued:

"Like, remember why you got in this game. You know what I'm saying. So go out there and show me. You know what I'm saying. So like, just having you know, we call him champ. Just having champ, give me some words. And just, he's a guy who again, you admire. So having him give me those words. And you know, it stuck with me like, don't forget, you here to take of your family."

When the team traded away quarterback Russell Wilson, nobody thought the Seahawks would have a winning record or make the playoffs.

Geno Smith led the team to victory in their season debate over the Russell Wilson-led Broncos, 17-16. Seattle then lost three out of their next four games before winning four straight, sitting at 6-3 halfway through the season.

They would lose the next five out of six games with a record of 7-8 before winning their last two games, finishing the year 9-8 with a wildcard spot.

Geno Smith set a franchise record in passing yards, led the league in completion percentage, and is set to earn a contract extension with the team.
