On Tuesday, the New York Jets announced that the team had handed a new deal to cornerback Michael Carter II ahead of their season-opener against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium. The 25-year-old signed a three-year, $30.75 million extension that can be worth up to $33 million, with $19 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid slot cornerback in the NFL.
Carter, a fifth-round draft pick in 2021, has missed only four games in his three seasons with the Jets and is a vital player in their secondary.
Some of the franchise's fans were overjoyed that the front office locked him up for the foreseeable future and celebrated the news of his extension on social media:

"Highest paid Slot Cornerback money for the best a slot cornerback in the league. Makes sense," one fan said.
"Best nickel in the league," another fan said.
"Great move, especially from a franchise who hasn’t had a great history of signing their homegrown players," another fan praised the deal.
However, some fans poked fun at Haason Reddick, who is the only remaining player in the league still holding out of practices.
The veteran linebacker has only one year left on his current deal and has been patiently waiting for the Jets to offer a new deal. However, he's yet to receive one and will likely miss their season opener against the 49ers.
Fans quipped that the 29-year-old will be incensed about the franchise offering Carter a new deal before him:
"(I know) Haason Reddick somewhere mad asf" - Wrote @Tori_Daze
"This is the wrong guy they needed to extend" - Remarked @og_yungdilly, potentially referring to Reddick.
"Jets beat is stalking Hassan Reddick and didn’t even know Michael Carter was getting a deal done" - Noted @notcolefanacc
Haason Reddick contract situation: Will the Jets let LB walk?
Haason Reddick had already paid $2 million in fines for missing every practice in training but is holding firm. The former Philadelphia Eagles star joined the team in April but hasn't practiced with his new teammates yet.
The pass rusher demanded a trade in August but the Jets responded that they do not intend to part ways with the veteran. However, three weeks have passed since he asked for an exit and there are no updates about his future.
When asked about the situation with Haason Reddick, Jets head coach Robert Saleh said, per the Associated Press.
"He’s a special football player and when he eventually gets here, he’s only going to help us.”
As things stand, it's hard to envision him suiting up for his new team in the upcoming campaign. It remains to be seen whether the two sides find a suitable compromise or if he exits the team without ever playing a snap for them.
