"He kind of shuts down" – Joey Bosa’s damning indictment of Derek Carr should give Jets pause in free agency

Quarterback Derek Carr is getting his first experience in NFL free agency this offseason. There are quite a few teams across the league that could add a veteran quarterback of his calibre to their offense.

One of those teams are the New York Jets who are in limbo with quarterback Zach Wilson after just two seasons.

However, past comments made by Los Angeles Chargers' linebacker Joey Bosa have resurfaced and don't look good for Carr as a player. In October 2021, Bosa spoke about the quarterback's presence in the pocket when pressure was coming his way.

The linebacker noted a sack by defensive end Christian Covington in which Carr seemed to be ready for the sack and didn't scramble to get the ball out of his hands.

"We knew once we hit him a few times, he really gets shook. And you saw on (Covington's) sack, he was pretty much curling into a ball before we even got back there. Great dude, great player...but we know once you get pressure on him, he kind of shuts down."

Joey Bosa added that Derek Carr is a great person and player but that opposing defenses know that once they apply pressure, they will be able to stop him. This is not what his future team, whichever that is, will want to hear.

Jets HC Robert Saleh calls Derek Carr an 'elite' QB

The New York Jets is a potential destination for Derek Carr in the near future. While attending the NFL Combine this week, Jets head coach Robert Saleh was asked about Carr as an option to run his offense.

Saleh compared the former Raiders quarterback to Matthew Stafford when he was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Los Angeles Rams, two years ago.

“An elite, elite mental makeup with regards to football IQ. He’s been asked to do a lot in his career. I think he’s more in line with what Stafford’s career has been. If you can just get him to a place that can surround him with all the pieces to just allow him to play quarterback 10-15 times a game, it would be pretty cool. He’s a solid young man.”

Before being traded to the Los Angeles Rams, Stafford never had much success with the Lions, nor had he ever won a playoff game. The first season he was with the Rams, he not only won a playoff game but led them to a Super Bowl win.
