Former Cardinals LB Pat Tillman's cause of death explained

The NFL will honor Pat Tillman at Super Bowl LVII this Sunday. Four scholars from the Pat Tillman Foundation will act as captains for the coin toss as the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs get set to lock horns.

The Pat Tillman Foundation was started as a way to honor the former NFL player who was drafted in the seventh round by Arizona. Tillman played for Arizona State University before entering the league.

He suited up in the NFL from 1998 through 2001. In his few years with the franchise, Tillman racked up All-Pro votes (in 2000) with the Cardinals, grabbing the attention of the league.

"Pat Tillman made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and we are committed to ensuring that his life and legacy are forever honored and celebrated across the entire NFL family," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a press release.
"Pat loved football, but most importantly, he was grounded in service to others and making a difference in this world. We are so proud of the Tillman Foundation and the Tillman Scholar's program whose mission is to help leaders make real change. These four Tillman Scholars have done just that and we are honored to have them join us on the field to represent the Pat Tillman Foundation as this year's coin toss captains."

Tillman put his burgeoning NFL career on hold in 2002 to enlist in the United States Army after the September 11 attacks.

However, he tragically lost his life in Afghanistan in 2004, reportedly through friendly fire.
