As Saquon Barkley made his Philadelphia Eagles debut against the Green Bay Packers, we were reminded of why it was considered such a coup when Philadelphia wrested him away from New York. He rushed for more than 100 yards and scored multiple touchdowns, showing why he is still one of the best backs in the league.

But the reason the Giants were, perhaps, unwilling to give Saquon Barkley a long-term contract was because of any possible injuries he might pick up, having previously missed significant time in his career. And such concerns came to the fore again during the Eagles' win over the Packers as he was seen wincing after a strong run.

Saquon Barkley looked hurt on the right side after a play and motioned for a replacement while holding his arm steady. He did not look too bad but it was still a moment of worry for Eagles fans.

Saquon Barkley plays pivotal role for Eagles against Packers

Barkley helped establish the run game as the Eagles ran out 34-29 winners in their opening game of the 2024 NFL season against the Packers. He had 24 attempts and accumulated 109 yards at 4.5 yards per carry. It showed that any concerns about the running back slowing down as he ages were unfounded. Working behind a strong offensive line, he pumped in great numbers and Philadelphia will be reveling in having snatched him from New York.

What will cause the Giants more heartburn is that he was great in the endzone as well, recording two rushing touchdowns and being an all-round menace for the Eagles against the Packers. He also added a receiving touchdown and 23 receiving yards on two attempts, showing his all-around threat.

His hat-trick on debut was the first time an Eagles had bagged three touchdowns on debut since Terrell Owens. While they are yet to play, New York fans will be looking at wistfully at what could have still been.

Any injury threat to Saquon Barkley will, therefore, be seen seriously after his performance tonight. Kenneth Gainwell, who sits behind the starting running back on the depth chart, had a single carry for a couple of yards, showing that Nick Sirianni is unlikely to rotate too much in the backfield behind Jalen Hurts.

Will Shipley is the other option in that position, indicating that the former Giant will probably be entrusted with a heavy workload throughout the season.
