The New York Jets could not have had a worse way to begin their 2024 season. In star quarterback Aaron Rodgers' first game back, they lost 32-19 at the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.

The defense, which had been a highlight for the Jets during their current period of offensive woes, could not stop Brock Purdy and Jordan Mason from dominating the game, as they combined for almost 400 yards.

And some fans had a culprit in mind: linebacker Haason Reddick, who did not practice, let alone play, amidst a holdout:

More reactions can be seen below:

"Rodgers might be washed," one "lamented".
"Jets what HAPPENEDUHHHH," another demanded.
"Jets are still overrated," another jeered.

Reddick has already incurred over $5 million in fines during his holdout. Starting this week, he will forfeit $791,666 of his salary - a pattern that will continue until he either finally joins practice or leaves the team. General manager Joe Douglas has already refused to trade him.

Key contributors as 49ers rout Jets on MNF

The worst part about the New York Jets’ loss was that Purdy, for all his passing dominance, might not have been the best San Francisco 49er on the field, if only because he did not score a touchdown.

Instead, both the defending NFC champions’ sixes came from rushes - one from Jordan Mason, starting in place of Christian McCaffrey; and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Most of their points, however, came from sophomore kicker Jake Moody, who was perfect in six field goal attempts.

Defensively, Leonard Floyd, the same man who tore Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles tendon on a low hit four snaps into the latter’s Gang Green debut last season (the former was a Buffalo Bill at the time), sacked him. Demetrius Flannigan Fowles also had an interception.

Rodgers, for his part, managed to complete 13 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown to his fellow ex-Green Bay Packer Allen Lazard, who also caught one from backup Tyrod Taylor very late in the game. Breece Hall rushed for a touchdown, and Michael Clemons and defensive backs Sauce Gardner and Tony Adams had a sack each.
