ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler doesn't think Bill Belichick is one of the top head coaching candidates available. Belichick is hoping to coach in 2025 after not coaching in 2024. Those teams potentially looking to hire a head coach are the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants.
Following Belichick's being let go from the New England Patriots, he did interviews for other jobs. But, he didn't get them, and heading into the 2025 season, Fowler doesn't think Belichick is a top candidate.
Instead, the NFL insider believes Belichick is in the second tier behind the likes of Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.
"My sense is Belichick will be somewhere in that second tier of candidates," Fowler wrote. "The hot coordinator pool, highlighted by Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, typically takes precedence.
"After that, the pool is wide open, and both Belichick and his former linebacker, Mike Vrabel, will be in the mix. I've talked to people in the league who believe Vrabel, fresh off a successful run in Tennessee, will have the edge over Belichick due to age (49 compared to 72) and his culture-building ability."
Even though Belichick is a future Hall of Fame and led the Patriots to six Super Bowls, the NFL insider still doesn't think he's a top candidate for teams.
Belichick has gone 302-165 all-time as an NFL head coach.
Bill Belichick wants to coach in 2025: Report
Bill Belichick is planning to coach in 2025, according to a report from The Athletic.
“Coaching is in his blood. He wants this,” a person close to Belichick told The Athletic over text.
Belichick could have interest from several NFL teams who could make a coaching change before the season is up. Former NFL coach and CBS Sports NFL analyst Bill Cowher also believes Belichick will coach in 2025.
“I think Bill will go back to coaching. I really do,” Cowher said on The Athletic’s “Sports Media Podcast with Richard Deitsch” this week. “But I also think he’s getting more and more comfortable as a broadcaster.
“I think Bill’s got the bug. But he’s getting better and better as a broadcaster and he’s getting plenty of practice. He’s on every different platform! Practice is not a problem with Bill.”
Belichick first was an NFL head coach in 1991 with the Cleveland Browns.
