Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since joining the league in 2017, that has been the gospel truth, it would appear.

Before the draft, Mahomes was expected to be a late first-to-early second-round pick. Following his impressive combine, where he tied the fastest pass ever recorded at 60 MPH, and with a rocket for an arm, scouts, analysts and managers were impressed, which boosted his draft stock.

Mahomes knew that he was going to be selected early on following his combine.

On the New Heights podcast with teammate Travis Kelce and his brother Jason this week, the quarterback recalled that he told Kansas City they needed to trade up before pick 12 if they wanted him to be their next franchise quarterback.

Mahomes said:

"The first day I met coach Reid was at the facility. We had the meetings like the top 30 visits, so I was in there for like 30 hours. He's just going thrugh just getting grilled plays going through plays and I'm going to give you all the inside scoop."
"Matt Nagy who was the offensive coordinator then, he really liked me so he gave me the plays they were gonna go over the night before so coach Reid's finding out here live on New Heights podcast. Yeah, so of course I crushed the meeting I stayed up all night studying those plays."

Mahomes added that he had a feeling that a couple of teams were eyeing him with their pick early in the draft.

He then urged the Chiefs to not let him drop below the number 12 pick in the draft.

"I kind of gave a little inside info to the Chiefs and was like, hey, if ya'll let me go anywhere below, at the time I didn't know about the Saints, y'all let me go 12 or below, I'm gonna get drafted by someone else. So I gave the Chiefs a little bit of info on that cause I wanted to be here."

Kansas City listened to Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs traded their first-round pick and a third-round pick in 2017, and the Chiefs' first-round pick in 2018 to move up 17 spots from pick 27 to 10 with the Buffalo Bills, and selected Mahomes.

Aside from starting the last regular season of his rookie year in 2017, Mahomes sat a season behind veteran quarterback Alex Smith.

Ever since taking over as the starter, the trade has paid off for KC.

Mahomes took home the MVP in 2018, and then brought a Lombardi Trophy back to KC the following season.

Kansas City are currently the number-one seed in the AFC with a 9-2 record and are, once again, a Super Bowl contender.
