In the AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes delivered a career-defining performance. Mahomes played well despite a high-ankle sprain and is now set for his third Super Bowl appearance in just five seasons as a starter in the NFL.
Mahomes recently gave an interview on "First Things First" where he was asked various things ahead of the Super Bowl clash against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was also asked about his thoughts when he got hurt in the Divisional Round.
When asked about the ankle sprain that he suffered against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Mahomes said:
"Well, I've been in that X-ray room before and it hasn't worked out well for me. So I thought I was good enough to play and I wanted to at least get one more series to get out there and see if I could test it out."
Mahomes added:
"Coach Reid, he says he has 51%, so he said, you're getting the X-ray before you play. So, you might as well go now and so I knew that I had to go back out there and back there and get the X-ray. And luckily enough, it was negative, and I was able to get back in the football game."
Few quarterbacks can perform at the level Mahomes did against the Cincinnati Bengals despite being injured, demonstrating how far ahead he is of the rest of the league.
With a win in the AFC Championship game, Patrick Mahomes ended a three-game losing streak against Joe Burrow and silenced many of his skeptics.
Patrick Mahomes is hungry for success
So far in his career, Patrick Mahomes is 1-1 in the Super Bowl. He won in his first appearance against the San Francisco 49ers but lost in his second one against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Having already suffered a loss on the biggest stage, Mahomes doesn't want to go through that feeling again. He is incredibly motivated to win the Super Bowl, and we could see him playing at an exceptional level, something he hasn't done in previous Super Bowls.
As of now, the Kansas City Chiefs are the underdogs against the Philadelphia Eagles, and it will further fuel Mahomes to prove his doubters wrong. In what was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Chiefs, they now have a shot at winning the biggest prize in football.
