Patriots fans rejoice as team confirms major changes in coaching staff

New England Patriots v Las Vegas Raiders
Matt Patricia will no longer run the offense

After the New England Patriots missed the playoffs, fans were screaming for changes to be made to the coaching staff. The team was mediocre for much of the season, and the offense regressed badly, with many fans pointing to the departure of Josh McDaniels as the biggest reason why.

The team got the message. On Thursday, the franchise announced that changes are coming to the staff, especially on the offensive side of the ball. New England has opened the search for an offensive coordinator, a job that was vacant for the 2022 season.

The Patriots had former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as the biggest offensive man, but his title was of senior offensive analyst. The experiment clearly did not work out, and the offense sputtered as a result, which is why head coach Bill Belichick decided to go after a man to lead the offense again.

New England also announced that former player and inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo would be given a new contract to remain with the team.

Fans of the franchise rejoiced with the news of the search for a new offensive coordinator.

Matt Patricia was a good defensive coordinator, but the fans' feelings about his job as an offensive coordinator are more than clear. Nevertheless, after watching the 2022 Patriots, you can understand why fans are saying that the nightmare is over.

How much did the Patriots offense regress in 2022?

Those who were expecting a step forward for quarterback Mac Jones in his second year were left baffling by how many mistakes he made and how much his performance dropped.

Jones took two steps backward in 2022, often missing easy throws and not making the correct reads. The lack of an offensive coordinator to scheme easy throws and make things easier for his quarterback were two of the biggest problems in the Patriots' season.

Belichick and the team deciding to reverse course and go after a new offensive leader is not surprising, but one has to wonder what was going through Belichick's mind when he decided to let Patricia run New England's offense. As was discovered, he paid the price.
