It turns out that seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady's transition from the gridiron to the booth was not a cakewalk. After signing a historic $375 million contract with Fox Sports, the former NFL QB is undergoing training to fit in the role of lead NFL analyst. Until now, Brady has called six games:
- Week 7: Super Bowl Rematch
- Week 9: Lions vs. Packers
- Week 11: Packers vs. Bears
- Week 12: 49ers vs. Packers
- Week 6: Cowboys vs. Lions
- Week 8: Bills vs. Seahawks
However, his performance did not have a commanding presence which was expected from the NFL Hall of Famer in the first place. During his coverage, he sounded nervous and took a tentative approach.
With each passing week, while Brady has shown improvement in his insights, he still has room to grow. Especially, TB12 needs to incorporate more of the technical aspects of the games into his analysis.
As per what John Ourand published in his "Puck" newsletter, Fox Sports is on this journey together with Brady.
The network is constantly in touch with the New England Patriots legend to give feedback. Plus, they are urging Brady to shift focus from leadership/ player development to an in-depth analysis of plays like X’s and O’s alongside the tactical breakdowns during live NFL games.
Ourand's newsletter reads:
"In his first 10 games as Fox Sports’ top analyst, Tom Brady has instead focused on things you don’t find in a playbook: pointing out the leadership of stars, focusing on the development of young players, and looking for accountability among veterans.
"Fox producers have been pushing Brady to incorporate more of what he’s seeing on the field — duh — into his commentary. And these sorts of observations — why a play worked or fell apart — are starting to pop up more frequently on the broadcast."
Yes, TB12 had a slow start but Fox Sports is interested in retaining Tom Brady in the booth for the long term.
In light of this discussion, Brady appeared on the "Let’s Go" podcast this Tuesday and opened up about his journey to the broadcasting booth after playing in the NFL for 23 years.
"I think the interesting part, you know, and it's been really fun, obviously, doing it, it's just from the 50-yard line," Brady said.
He added:
"You're watching every game from the booth, and I’ve watched 400 games from the sideline. It’s like, how many have actually, from the 50-yard line, looked down on the field, and honestly, getting your eyes in the right place."
Clearly, the learning curve has been steep for Brady. But his journey has only just started.
