In an unexpected roster shakeup, the Cincinnati Bengals are parting ways with veteran linebacker and team captain Germaine Pratt. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported the move on X on Monday.

The decision closes the book on Pratt’s six-year tenure in Cincinnati. The 29-year-old was originally drafted 72nd overall in 2019 and grew into a defensive cornerstone, starting every game he was available for over the past four seasons.

Fan reaction from Bengals fans in X was anything but calm.

"That organization is garbage lol," one fan said.

"Bengals D taking a hit..," another fan said.
"Bengals horrible defense is getting worse at an alarming rate," one fan said.

Some fans predicted more organizational dysfunction:

"bengals gonna bengal," one fan said.
"Releasing people so they have more money to NOT pay other people," another fan said.
"Sell the team," one fan said.

Pratt’s production in 2024 was among the best of his career—143 total tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and six passes defended. He ranked among the NFL’s top 10 tacklers and remained one of the Bengals’ most consistent voices on defense. Yet none of it was enough to earn him a third contract.

Instead, Cincinnati will absorb $2.3 million in dead money while saving roughly $5.25 million against the 2025 cap. Germaine Pratt had signed a three-year, $20.25 million deal just last offseason but reportedly requested a trade in February. Though he skipped OTAs and voluntary workouts this spring, he remained on the roster until now.

While the Bengals did add Oren Burks via free agency and drafted Demetrius Knight Jr. and Barrett Carter in April, none are expected to immediately fill the leadership void left behind.

Germaine Pratt takes apparent shot at Bengals management

Germaine Pratt commemorated his exit with a cryptic Instagram Story, featuring a photo of himself alongside defensive end Trey Hendrickson. Notably, both players have clashed with management this offseason. Hendrickson received permission to seek a trade in March while negotiating an extension, and like Germaine Pratt, he has avoided voluntary team activities.

Compounding the uncertainty is the Bengals’ recent coaching turnover. Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo was dismissed earlier this year after a rocky 2024 campaign. His replacement, Al Golden, returns to the franchise after a stint as linebackers coach a decade ago.
