Tom Brady defied the odds, scoring 14 points in about three minutes to steal a victory from the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were all but finished when their leader rose up and dragged them back to a win which puts a little more distance between first and last in the NFC South.
Mark Schlereth, an NFL analyst, didn't mince words when it came to praising the performance.
On the Carton Show, Schlereth said:
"That's the world's greatest American, by the way. I don't call him Tom Brady- he's the world's greatest American. You name it."
The crew was impressed with the Buccaneers' improbable come-from-behind victory. Prior to the first fourth-quarter touchdown, ESPN had the Saints with a 97.6% chance of victory.
That all came crashing down in the final few minutes thanks to Brady's excellence. Even in a down year when he and the team have struggled mightily, he's still who he always was.
Even if that only shows up in spurts during games, it's apparently enough to win the NFC South. The Buccaneers moved to 6-6 and are two and a half games up on the Saints, who they finished off the sweep of.
What seed will Tom Brady and the Buccaneers end up with in the NFC?
Despite the Buccaneers leading their division, they would not hold a playoff spot if they were in any other division. They are 6-6, and the Washington Commanders, who are 7-5-1, would take their spot if not for the playoff alignment.
Still, a division win is important. It keeps them in the top half of seeds and prevents them from playing a top playoff team right away.
If the season were to end today, at .500, the Buccaneers would be the NFC's fourth seed. That could change, but they'd have to go on a run and surpass the currently 8-4 San Francisco 49ers.
That's doable now that both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo are out for a long time, but given how poor the Buccaneers have been all season, it's still not very likely.
