Mike McCarthy is going to remember Dallas Cowboys' Week 9 performance against the Atlanta Falcons for a long time.
In the second half, as the Cowboys were just four points behind the Falcons, McCarthy decided to go for a second risky play — a fake punt attempt.
Surprisingly, the Falcons' defense could sniff it out without any signs of struggle and tackled the punter well short of the line to gain. The miscalculation gave Atlanta the upper hand with an excellent field position. Moreover, just a few plays later, Atlanta scored a TD, increased the lead and won 27-21.
Once the clip of the blunder went viral on X, the Cowboys fans were enraged and did not spare a chance to criticize the head coach.
“Lmao!!! No way?! This deserves jail time down 4 points. An entire 2nd half left to play," one fan exclaimed.
While another fan wrote, "McCarthy is coaching his last game with the team."
Meanwhile, another fan mentioned,
"The Cowboys need to tighten up those plays! Can’t afford mistakes like that!”
The Dallas Cowboys are 3-5 in the NFC East. With every loss, the pressure on the head coach Mike McCarthy will only increase manifold and could eventually lead to his firing.
Jerry Jones has shut down rumors about Mike McCarthy's job loss
Dallas Cowboys' 82-year-old GM, Jerry Jones seems to feel the team's success does not hinge on just one person and the onus lies on both players and coaching staff.
When questioned about possibly sacking Mike McCarthy in-season following the Cowboy's worst loss since 1988 against the Detroit Lions last month, Jones did not take it well.
"Oh, I haven't even considered that," Jones said. "I'm not considering that. Just so you're clear, I'm not considering that."
Next, as the octogenarian was prompted how 14 years back, he terminated Wade Phillips after a 1-7 start and put Jason Garrett on interim coach duty, Jones said:
"That would be a hypothetical. In that matter, do you think I'm an idiot? Do you?" Jones fumed. "Ok. Well, I'm not going to hypothetical with you about would I consider a coaching change in light of the timing we're sitting here with. I'm not. At all."
Nonetheless, Mike McCarthy is in the final year of his five-year contract with the Cowboys which was not extended ahead of the ongoing NFL season.
Before joining the Cowboys, he was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018, and during his tenure, the team won Super Bowl XLV against the Steelers in 2011.
