The Las Vegas Raiders fell to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday with a score of 24-0. They're just 2-5 on the season, a record that indicates they'll be sitting at home during the playoffs. Thus far, Josh McDaniels' hiring as head coach does not seem to be working as intended.
As a result, McDaniels has routinely been called into closed-door meetings with Mark Davis, the Raiders owner. Following the abysmal performance and sheer inability to score points, the head coach was called into Davis' office once again.
While there's no indication that the Raiders intend to fire McDaniels in his first season, this is not what the team envisioned at all. He was the offensive coordinator alongside Bill Belichick, one of the greatest coaches of all time. McDaniels was supposed to drive the offense forward, which is yet to happen consistently.
Combine that with the fact that one of last year's wild card teams added Davante Adams to the mix, and the 2-5 record is even more disappointing. The Saints came into the game with only two wins as well, so it's not as if Las Vegas were dominated by an elite team. They were embarrassed and it's as clear a sign as any that it isn't working out.
What happened to the Las Vegas Raiders?
Last year, with interim head coach Rich Bisaccia, Las Vegas finished 10-7 and made the playoffs, nearly beating the eventual AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals. In the offseason, they brought in arguably the best wide receiver in the game and hired McDaniels, yet they've nearly matched their loss total from last year already.
They kept hold of their core players and several, including running back Josh Jacobs, are having good campaigns. However, this has not translated into to the win column. That more than likely falls on coaching.
McDaniels is in the first of a four-year contract with the Raiders, so a firing is unlikely during the season. However, for a storied franchise like this, they may not tolerate the ineptitude for a whole lot longer. Las Vegas play in a very tough division, but losing to the Saints and blowing a huge lead against the Arizona Cardinals is tough to take.
We will see if Mike McDaniels makes it through the season.
