Although Tom Brady is retired, some of his brand of football still lives on in other players floating around the league. One such player is Jimmy Garoppolo, who at one point was in line to take over the throne from the most accomplished quarterback of all time for the New England Patriots.

Of course, that never panned out. Before the reported drama that unfolded with Bill Belichick, Brady, and owner Robert Kraft, Garoppolo's main goal was to soak it all in. That didn't mean he was going to roll over for "TB12," however.

While speaking with Bleacher Report, he revealed that there were times when the two let the competitive rage consume them.

“The competitiveness between the two of us was very similar. If I’m playing my best friend in one-on-one basketball, if we are both into it, by the end, we are going to hate each other. That’s how it is.
“All the good competitors have that. We got along, but there were always times when we wanted to kill each other. It was a healthy, competitive relationship.”

Will Jimmy Garoppolo reach the playoffs in 2023?

Of course, at the heart of the NFL, unlike in many industries, is the cutthroat dynamic of the depth chart. The only way for players to get a job is to take someone else's, whether by circumstance or by ripping it away.

While Tom Brady was ripping away Lombardi trophies from various teams, Jimmy Garoppolo was waiting for his chance to usurp the greatest quarterback of all time.

Garoppolo was drafted almost a decade ago with the New England Patriots' second-round pick in 2014. He spent three years in New England behind TB12. He made his opportunity count during Brady's absence due to deflategate, catching the attention of fans across the country.

However, the Patriots decided to keep faith in Brady. They sent his heir to San Francisco, where he remained for six seasons, making a Super Bowl appearance.

Now, after years of holding off Trey Lance, the San Francisco 49ers let Garoppolo walk. He landed with the Las Vegas Raiders, coached by Josh McDaniels, his former offensive coordinator in New England.

Will the de facto Bill Belichick colony find success so far from home?
