The Arizona Cardinals announced former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon as their new head coach, two days after his team lost the Super Bowl LVII 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs in Arizona.

This will be Gannon's first experience as a head coach. He's 40 years old and has worked as a defensive coach in the NFL for over a decade now, also spending three years as a scout for the Los Angeles Rams.

The Cardinals were just waiting for Super Bowl LVII to finish to decide who was going to be their next head coach. Gannon had a second interview with the franchise right after the loss and beat out Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo to earn the job.

Jonathan Gannon's hired: who's the new Arizona Cardinals coach?

Gannon has ascended in NFL circles following an amazing season as the Eagles defensive coordinator. Philadelphia came close to matching the record set by the 1985 Chicago Bears with the most sacks in a season (72), missing out on the mark because of two sacks.

He had already been interviewed for a head coach job following his first season as the defensive coordinator in Philadelphia, but the Denver Broncos decided to go with Nathaniel Hackett back then. Hackett lasted just 15 games on the job.

He started his coaching career in 2007 as a defensive quality control coach with the Atlanta Falcons. He moved up to a scouting job for three years and returned to the sidelines in 2012 as a defensive quality control coach, but with the Tennessee Titans until 2014.

He was then hired to be the assistant defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings, a job he held from 2014 to 2017. A year later, he became the defensive backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts, staying there until 2020, when he moved to Philadelphia with head coach Nick Sirianni.

Although his final game as the defensive coordinator wasn't good, he led one of the best defenses in the league in 2022 and was a coveted hire for many teams. He can now start fixing Arizona's defensive unit, which has been a problem for many years.
