NFL rule changes 2023: Roster cuts, jersey number 0 and many more changes introduced

There will be several new rule changes in the NFL for the 2023 season. During Tuesday's annual league meeting in Phoenix, new playing rules, three bylaws, and three resolutions were approved.

Notably, players will now be able to wear the No. 0 jersey for next season. Additionally, there will be just one date for the roster cuts. Here's a look at all the key rule changes for the 2023 NFL campaign:

  • Proposed by Philadelphia Eagles: Players can use the jersey number "zero" (0).
  • Proposed by Los Angeles Chargers: Referees will be adjusting the play clock following an instant replay reversal the same way they do following other stoppages.
  • Proposed by Houston Texans: Replay official's automatic jurisdiction to lose play on a failed fourth-down attempt.
  • Proposed by Competition Committee: A launch (personal foul) is now if a player leaves one or both feet to make a tackle.
  • Proposed by Competition Committee: The penalty for tripping a personal foul will result in 15 yards and an automatic first down.
  • Proposed by Competition Committee: Illegally handing the ball, including illegal forward passes.
  • Proposed by Competition Committee: The penalty for illegal punts and drop kicks will be a loss of down at the place of the foul.
  • Proposed by Competition Committee: Prevent the offense from benefitting by an extension of the half as a result of their foul.
  • Proposed by Competition Committee: Clarify the use of a helmet against an opponent by removing the “butt, ram, spear” language and incorporating those actions into the prohibited use of the helmet.

Here are the key approved bylaws for the 2023 NFL season:

  • Proposed by Buffalo Bills: Make the regular season and postseason roster transaction deadlines the same; change the transaction deadline for Saturday night postseason games to 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.
  • Proposed by Los Angeles Chargers: Providing further clarity towards a player’s availability for a game.
  • Proposed by 25 teams: Establishlish one preseason roster reduction date and related procedures.

When is the 2023 NFL season starting?

The 2023 NFL season is scheduled to kick-off on September 7, 2023. Defending Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to play in the opening game of the campaign.

The playoffs are tipped to commence on January 13, 2024. Importantly, the Super Bowl LVIII is expected to take place on February 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium.
