3 of NFL’s greatest black quarterbacks of all time

A great deal of star black quarterbacks have come and gone throughout NFL history. We've witnessed the likes of Randall Cunningham, Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts. The list goes on and on.

Doug Williams was the first black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl, as he powered Washington to a 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos (Super Bowl XXII). Williams was named MVP of the game after throwing for 340 yards and four touchdowns.

In 2003, Steve McNair became the first black QB to win NFL MVP, sharing the award with Peyton Manning. Then in 2015, Cam Newton became the first to solely win the award.

Here is a list of the three greatest black quarterbacks in NFL history.

#1 - Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is the best player in the league today and the greatest black signal-caller the NFL has ever seen.

The 2017 first-round pick has enjoyed an unbelievable six-year career with the Kansas City Chiefs. His resume includes two Super Bowl victories, two Super Bowl MVP awards and two NFL MVPs.

Mahomes has earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in each of the five seasons he has been a starter. Although he's only 27 years old, he would still be a first-ballot Hall of Famer if he retired right now. That's crazy to think about.

#2 - Warren Moon

Warren Moon is the only black quarterback in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and surely, Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson will join him eventually.

After beginning his professional career with six seasons in the Canadian Football League, Moon joined the NFL in 1984. He played 17 NFL seasons with the Houston Oilers, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs.

The nine-time Pro Bowler won NFL Man of the Year (1989) and NFL Offensive Player of the Year (1990). He was also the league's passing yard leader twice and the passing touchdowns leader once.

#3 - Russell Wilson

While Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III were supposed to be the biggest star quarterbacks of the 2012 NFL Draff, Russell Wilson, who was drafted in the third round, turned out to be the most successful.

Wilson played his first 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks before playing his first season as a member of the Denver Broncos this past season. He led the Seahawks to back-to-back Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XLVIII 43-8 over Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

He led the league in passer rating (2015) and passing touchdowns (2017) and was also named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2020.
