NY Jets reportedly targeting 3 QBs in 2023 NFL offseason to replace Zach Wilson

Zach Wilson was selected by the New York Jets as the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. After just two years, the organization may be looking to move on from their young quarterback prospect in the 2023 NFL offseason.

Zach Wilson has been benched multiple times during the 2022 NFL season for both Mike White and Joe Flacco. He may now have run out of opportunities to secure the starting quarterback role for the Jets.

He has completed just 55 percent of his career passes for 15 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, so he has clearly struggled to live up to the expectations that come along with being selected high in the draft.

According to NFL reporter Connor Hughes, who covers the New York Jets and Giants for SNY, the Jets are expected to pursue these three veteran quarterback options who may be available during the 2023 NFL offseason as potential replacements for Zach Wilson.

#1 - Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo has signed a one-year contract to return to the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the 2022 NFL season. He initially served as a backup for Trey Lance, but was forced into the starting role when Lance suffered a season-ending injury. After suffering an injury of his own, Garoppolo was replaced by rookie Brock Purdy.

Purdy has helped the 49ers win six consecutive games as part of their active 10-game winning streak to end the regular season. It appears that either Lance or Purdy will be the 49ers' quarterback next year. This means Garoppolo will almost definitely opt for free agency. He's a proven veteran who would provide much more stability for the Jets than Zach Wilson.

#2 - Derek Carr

Derek Carr has been one of the biggest disappointments this year. After leading the Las Vegas Raiders to the playoffs last year, he entered the 2022 NFL season with high expectations. They rose even higher when the Raiders acquired Davante Adams during the offseason. The Raiders proceeded to turn in a miserable 6-11 record.

Carr struggled so much during the 2022 season that he was benched for the last two games of the year in favor of Jarrett Stidham. He's now expected to be made available during the 2023 NFL offseason. The Jets are expected to inquire about Carr as a replacement for Zach Wilson.

#3 - Lamar Jackson

Lamar Jackson has been seeking a long-term contract extension with the Baltimore Ravens, but the two sides have been unable to come to an agreement on the details of the potential deal. Jackson's current contract expires at the end of the 2022 NFL season, so he could be available during the offseason.

As a former NFL MVP award winner and in the prime of his career, Jackson will draw a lot of interest during the 2023 NFL offseason is he is in fact on his way out of Baltimore. The New York Jets are expected to make an aggressive push to acquire him to replace Zach Wilson.
