Patrick Mahomes looking to beat curse that Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Dan Marino could not in Super Bowl showdown

Patrick Mahomes is facing a few curses for Super Bowl LVII

For many reasons, Patrick Mahomes faces an uphill battle against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. The Eagles present one of the toughest defenses in the NFL and a few longtime curses would have Mahomes the underdog today.

Per AP reporter Josh Dubow, Mahomes is looking to become the first quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl while also leading the NFL in passing yards.

He tweeted:

"Patrick Mahomes is the 7th QB to reach the Super Bowl in season when he led NFL in yards passing. The others went 0-6: Tom Brady 2017 season, Peyton Manning 2013, Brady 2007, Rich Gannon 2002, Kurt Warner 2001 and Dan Marino 1984."

Mahomes was far and away the NFL's passing leader this year. He totaled 5,250 yards through the air, the only player to reach the 5,000 plateau in 2022-23. He led second-place Justin Herbert by over 500 yards.

Hopefully, that production doesn't come back to haunt him, but he'll be breaking a long line of historic losses for players just like him.

Patrick Mahomes facing a couple of curses in Super Bowl LVII

Patrick Mahomes has his work cut out for him this Super Bowl. He doesn't have a top tier group of pass catchers anymore and the Eagles are a well-rounded team, arguably the best in football.

There are a couple of curses working against him, too. Aside from the passing yards leader curse, Mahomes has to overcome two more.

MVPs have not won a Super Bowl since 1999 when Kurt Warner did it. Since then, no player who's won MVP and played in the Super Bowl has won.

Additionally, in the past 40 years, there have been a few matchups between the MVP and the runner-up in the Super Bowl. This year's runner-up? Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Every single time those two players have matched up in a given season's Super Bowl, the runner-up has been victorious.

If Mahomes is to win his second Super Bowl, he's going to have to play exceptionally well. He may also have to do something to get these curses to go away.
