Will Commanders part ways with Carson Wentz? Recent update reveals telling impact on former Eagles QB's NFL future

As the Philadelphia Eagles take to the field for the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday (February 12), Carson Wentz will be wondering what might have been.

While Jalen Hurts has shown himself to be capable of leading the franchise, it so could have been Carson Wentz in a parallel timeline. He was supposed to be their franchise leader and had a tremendous season last time the Eagles won the Super Bowl. Of course, an injury towards the end of the season meant that Nick Foles took over in the playoffs and eventually lifted the Lombardi Trophy.

Instead, what has happened is that Wentz has now lost three back-to-back starting spots in as many years. He lost his starting place in Philadelphia and went to the Indianapolis Colts. He lost his starting place at the Colts and came to the Washington Commanders.

Now at the Commanders, coach Ron Rivera has confirmed that the presumptive starting quarterback going forward will be Sam Howell and not Wentz. With them reposing faith in the youngster over a veteran like him and Taylor Heinicke having more experience in the organization, it looks likely that Wentz could be done in Washington.

What's next for Carson Wentz?

Carson Wentz would look to be the starting quarterback for any other NFL team. but he faces a few challenges.

First, there are more established names in the market who would probably be available, like Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr and maybe even Baker Mayfield. Secondly, his abysmal record of losing his starting spot in the last three seasons is worrying. Finally, teams can always dip into the draft to get someone new instead of trying with someone who has not established himself.

However, Wentz may still luck out, as there are teams that need a new quarterback. The Carolina Panthers could have been a possible destination, but given that his former Colts coach Frank Reich is now incumbent there, that may prove unlikely. The Houston Texans might be on the lookout for a new quarterback as well, given Davis Mills threw the joint-most interceptions last season.

Eventually, though, this offseason could be a drag on Carson Wentz. Unlike last season, when he went early to the Washington Commanders, he might have to play a waiting game till the dust settles down on trades, free agency and the NFL draft.

When the roulette wheel finally stops, he may still have an opportunity to join somewhere new and fight for a starting spot yet again.
