Ryan Tannehill injury update: Latest on Titans QB for Week 8 fantasy football

Los Angeles Chargers v Tennessee Titans
Ryan Tannehill injury update for Week 8 fantasy football

Ryan Tannehill is currently in his fourth season as the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans. During his time with the team, he has missed eight total games due to various injuries. None of those have occurred during the 2023 NFL season, as he has started all six games so far this year. That could change in Week 8 as he's reportedly dealing with an ankle injury.

The Titans spent Week 7 on their bye week, but that apparently may not have been enough time for Tannehill to recover from an ankle injury he suffered in their most recent Week 6 game. This puts his status for Week 8 in jeopardy, so fantasy football managers with him on their rosters may need to make other plans.

Following the Week 7 bye, the Tennessee Titans began their Week 8 preparations for a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons with a practice session Monday. Ryan Tannehill was reportedly a non-participant as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.

According to head coach Mike Vrabel, per Titans reporter Jim Wyatt via his personal X account:

"Ryan Tannehill won't practice today. If he can't play, I'd anticipate Malik Willis and Will Levis both playing vs the Falcons."

While it's still early in the week, this isn't an encouraging update for those hoping to use Tannehill in their fantasy football lineups for Week 8. His practice activity during the week, as well as his official listing on the Titans injury report, will give a better idea of where he currently stands.

What happened to Ryan Tannehill?

During the Tennessee Titans' Week 6 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in NFL London, Tannehill was forced out with an ankle injury. After being evaluated by the medical staff, he was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game. He was having a rough performance prior to his early exit, completing just 50.0% of his passes with an interception and two sacks.

In his absence, young dual-threat quarterback Malik Willis stepped into the quarterback position for the rest of the contest. While not spectacular by any means, Willis performed better than Tannehill, completing four of his five passes and also adding 17 rushing yards in their defeat to the Ravens.

When will Ryan Tannehill return?

Tannehill has yet to be officially ruled out for the Titans' Week 8 game against the Falcons, but being unable to practice at all in their first session after a bye week puts his availability in question. It also sounds as though Vrabel is already considering alternatives, as he reportedly mentioned the idea of playing both Malik Willis and rookie Will Levis during the contest.

An official diagnosis on Tannehill can be expected later this week when the Titans release their first Week 8 injury report. While he has a chance of playing, fantasy football managers would be wise to come up with a backup plan this week if they usually have Tannehill in their starting lineups.
