Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta sustained a shoulder injury in the third quarter of the team's Week 10 game against the Houston Texans. After the injury, he first left the field for evaluation, and although he attempted to return later, his efforts proved abortive.
Following the game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave a status report on the former Iowa tight end, stating that LaPorta had sprained his AC joint. He once again discussed the TE's condition during a media availability on Monday, stating that while LaPorta is regarded as day-to-day, he does not expect his shoulder problem to become a bothersome injury.
The Lions' injury report at the beginning of the week was merely an estimate because they conducted a walkthrough on Wednesday instead of a full practice. Still, LaPorta's absence is noteworthy.
It may still be too early to predict whether LaPorta will play in Week 11, though, because it is common for players who sustain injuries over the weekend to skip the first practice of the week.
The Lions are scheduled to host the Jacksonville Jaguars for their Week 11 slate on Sunday. To have a better idea of the second-year TE's possible availability for Sunday, it is crucial to monitor the team's injury reports on Thursday and Friday to see how well he is recovering.
Even if Sam LaPorta can play, the Lions may bench him this week just to be safe. The team can afford to rest its star tight end if it guarantees safety because they are currently comfortable at 8-1 on the season. Additionally, the team may believe they won't necessarily need LaPorta to win that game since they are playing the 2-8 Jaguars.
Sam LaPorta injury update: What happened to the Lions' TE?
Sam LaPorta was forced to leave in the second half of the Week 10 game against the Houston Texans due to a shoulder injury. He made a big catch in the third quarter but appeared to have hurt his shoulder while landing.
Although LaPorta wasn't shown holding his shoulder in pain at any point after the catch, he left the field and was ruled questionable to return. He was reportedly evaluated for about 10 minutes before being ruled out to return.
Sam LaPorta had three receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown against the Texans before he exited the game.
If LaPorta can't play for Detroit against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Brock Wright is expected to be the next man in line.
