Gus Edwards fantasy football outlook

Gus Edwards has been having a disappointing 2024 fantasy football season so far with the Los Angeles Chargers. He entered the year with high expectations as a starting running back in a run-heavy offensive scheme, but has failed to finish better than RB36 in any week this season so far.

Things got even worse for Edwards when he was placed on the injured reserve list last week after suffering an ankle injury. This puts his outlook for the remainder of the season in jeopardy and makes him a drop candidate from fantasy rosters ahead of the Week 7 slate of games.

Gus Edwards was becoming a drop candidate even before he suffered his ankle injury that landed him on the injured reserve list. Across his past two games with the Los Angeles Chargers, he totaled just nine carries for 28 yards. He has clearly fallen behind JK Dobbins on their depth chart and the new starter has been having an impressive 2024 fantasy football season.

Managers that have open IR spots on their fantasy rosters can use one of them on Edwards, but he is not a priority to stash for the remainder of the season. He can safely be dropped in most formats, with the exception of deeper leagues. Unless Dobbins suffers an injury, it's unlikely that Edwards will earn a large enough role to become a relevant option in fantasy football again.

Gus Edwards fantasy outlook for the rest of 2024 NFL season

Many managers were excited to target Gus Edwards during their 2024 fantasy football drafts. He was projetced to be the starting running back for the Los Angeles under Jim Harbaugh, who is known for his run-heavy offensive philosophy. He opened the season in the starter role, but was quickly surpassed by JK Dobbins, who demonstrated much more explosiveness and upside.

Edwards' disappointing season includes just 113 rushing yards and zero touchdowns across four games. For comparison, Dobbins has exploded for a massive 488 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns on his way to three weekly finishes among the top 10 fantasy football running backs.

Dobbins appears firmly planted at the top of the Chargers' depth chart, so even when Edwards is healthy again, he's unlikely to receive a significant portion of the backfield workload. Another potential issue with his fantasy outlook is that rookie Kimani Vidal will get an opportunity in his absence. If Vidal performs well, Edwards may even fall to third on their depth chart.
