Should I drop Jordan Mason? Week 11 fantasy projection for 49ers RB after Christian McCaffrey's return

Jordan Mason has a fantastic stretch during the early portion of the San Francisco 49ers' 2024 season. With Christian McCaffrey needing to heal a very debilitating Achilles injury, he exploded for over 600 yards and three touchdowns across the team's first nine games.

But then, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year returned in Week 10 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, using the bye week to his advantage. And while he was limited to only 39 yards on 13 carries, he was still their top rusher.

Mason, meanwhile, had just a single five-yard carry as rookie Isaac Guerendo continued his rise. Does that now mean he is on the chopping block as Week 11 looms against the Seattle Seahawks?

There is a stunning precipitousness in how Jordan Mason's fantasy stock has fallen so far. Across his first four games, while he easily hauled in double-figures, his first three games showed an eerie prediction of this trend:

From Week 1, where the 49ers won, there were two sharp drops in their subsequent losses. But when they won again, his haul dramatically increased.

And then he delivered only 8.8 points in Week 5 – the beginning of a three-game skid that also saw him injure his shoulder. By the time the 49ers began winning again in Week 8 against the Dallas Cowboys, Guerendo was seeing more snaps – and the rookie broke out there with 85 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

Nevertheless, Mason's overall total of 103.6 points ensures that he will have some value, even as he sits at RB42 in Sportskeeda's fantasy football rankings. With Christian McCaffrey still needing to be managed after his Achilles injury, he and Guerendo should perform well as backups.

Better for them, the Seahawks are one of the worst-performing teams when it comes to preventing the run, allowing 24.16 points against the RB position – 23rd overall. This can be attributed to the lack of top-level, front-seven defenders besides Leonard Williams – in sheer contrast to the loaded secondary that boasts Pro Bowl corners Tariq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon.

Overall, however, the verdict leans towards dropping Jordan Mason. McCaffrey is healthy again and Guerendo looks like the future face of the franchise. He just does not have a place to belong in a stacked offense that also employs Deebo Samuel on rushing plays.
