Should Raiders consider drafting future QB after releasing Derek Carr?

Derek Carr's time with the Las Vegas Raiders has come to an end after nine seasons and not a single playoff win.

While Carr was an above-average quarterback for most of the time he was with the team, Las Vegas never gave him much support. He also never really clicked with head coach Josh McDaniels. Now, it's time for both parties to go in different directions.

Carr himself is up for a nice payday, as there's no shortage of suitors for his services, perhaps none more enticing than the New York Jets and their massive cap space. But for the Raiders, there's no clear answer to the question of what to do after Carr's exit, especially as they have a roster full of stars but no quarterback to lead them.

The Raiders have enough cap space to sign a veteran on the market. With Jimmy Garoppolo a free agent and Aaron Rodgers a possible trade candidate, should they look for a quarterback with the seventh overall pick in the draft?

Drafting a quarterback doesn't make sense for the Raiders

Last season, Las Vegas traded for Davante Adams, signed Chandler Jones, and extended Maxx Crosby's contract. They were clearly loading up.

Why would they change course and go after a young quarterback now?

The Raiders should go after a veteran quarterback with experience, whether that's Jimmy Garoppolo or Aaron Rodgers. They simply can't wait for a quarterback to develop as their superstars get older.

There's no guarantee that drafting a quarterback with the seventh pick will be a good deal anyway. Even if he has superstar potential, they will need to give him time to develop, which they can ill afford in a division containing Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert.

The Las Vegas roster is built to win now. They just need the right piece in the quarterback position. Garoppolo might be McDaniels' guy as they look to finally make some noise in the playoffs.

As such, using their high draft pick on a quarterback would be a bad, bad move. They are built to win now, and they should go hard after a veteran quarterback.
