Xavier Worthy was a hot commodity ahead of the 2024 NFL draft. The then Texas Longhorns wide receiver was fresh off breaking the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and had enjoyed an impressive collegiate career with the Longhorns.
Due to his Combine numbers, Worthy went up draft boards and was viewed as a likely first-round pick across league circles. Hence, it surprised him when the Colts called him early in the first round, only to hang up abruptly when they figured out they had dialed the wrong number. The Colts eventually used their first-round pick on defensive lineman Laiatu Latu. The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Worthy later in the first round with the 28th overall pick.
Worthy shared the news while on “The Rich Eisen Show.” NFL fans were outraged by the Colts' treatment of the speedster.
"Unfortunately, a large segment of people find "being a callous jerk" funny," another wrote.
"It’s not meant to be funny to the draftee," another wrote.
Some see this as the Chiefs' gain and the Colts' loss:
"And dude is a fan favorite right now to boot," a fan wrote.
"He’s been awesome. Came in, in the slot and has been an absolute problem," another wrote.
"He's been excellent. Fast, physical, on time. He has the intensity of someone playing with his hair on fire but he's so controlled and pinpoint," another wrote.
How has Xavier Worthy performed this season?
Xavier Worthy returned from an unpleasant "welcome to the NFL" experience. The Texas product recorded a receiving touchdown and a rushing touchdown in his first game with the Chiefs, which happened to be against the Baltimore Ravens.
Worthy has carved out a role on Andy Reid's side as a dependable pass catcher and willing runner. He has amassed a stat line of 19 catches, 235 receiving yards and three receiving TDs. He has also added seven carries, 47 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns for good measure. Worthy has yet to taste defeat in his young NFL career.
The Indianapolis Colts are having an up-and-down season under coach Shane Steichen. They have a 4–4 record heading into Week 9 when they're up against the Minnesota Vikings. The Colts haven't had the best productivity from their wide receivers, so they could have used a dynamic and versatile weapon in Worthy.
