"Took that BS deal" - Richard Sherman pins blame on Patrick Mahomes for Lamar Jackson's contract standoff

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens are at a crossroads in a long-term contract extension. The Ravens elected to place the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson right before the start of free agency.

Jackson has been seeking a lucrative long-term deal since last summer, and the two sides are still having differences in a new contract.

Some suggest that Jackson is seeking a fully-guaranteed contract, much like the one the Cleveland Browns gave to Deshaun Watson. After acquiring him last off-season, the Browns gave him a five-year $230 million fully guaranteed contract.

There have only been two fully guaranteed contracts in NFL history prior to Watson's deal (Kirk Cousins, Aaron Rodgers.)

While Lamar Jackson and the Ravens have stalled in talks, former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman blames Patrick Mahomes for Jackson's contract standoff.

Sherman said:

"What pissed me off is when Kirk Cousins got his fully guaranteed deal I thought all the quarterbacks from then on we're gonna be like, hey, if it ain't guaranteed I ain't taking it then Mahomes took that BS deal, just 10 years and wanted to look like half a billion like, but if you get half of that, well, the guaranteed everybody's happier that says President but when he didn't set it in Josh Allen didn't set it. Now Lamar is trying to set it after the Deshaun’s already set it, and they're like, nah."

Cousins was given the first fully-guaranteed contract in 2018 when the Vikings gave him a three-year $84 million fully guaranteed contract.

Mahomes, one of, if not the best quarterbacks in the NFL, signed a 10-year deal worth up to $503 million with the Kansas City Chiefs. Of that $503 million, only $141 million is fully guaranteed.

Cousins and Watson's deals are roughly four years apart and it seems like there won't be another fully-guaranteed contract any time soon.

It seems as if Lamar Jackson had the opportunity to sign a fully-guaranteed contract. He reportedly turned down a three-year $133 million fully guaranteed deal from the Baltimore Ravens.

The deal would have paid him $44.33 million per year and would make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in total money and guaranteed money.
