Travis Etienne versus David Montgomery is likely going to be a hot topic for debate until Sunday. After the first week of the NFL is gone, fans can now start to make assumptions as to who they should pick for their fantasy football teams – and why.
Here's a closer look to see which running back is a better option between the two.
Is Travis Etienne a good pick in Week 2?
Although he holds a nice role in fantasy football due to his receiving duties, it's difficult to get excited for him in Week 2 in what should be a game against one of the best defenses in the league.

He split carries with Tank Bigsby in Week 1 against the Dolphins (12/12), but Bigsby outmatched him in yards (73 to 44) in a game where more was expected from Etienne. Of course, he added two receptions and 15 more yards, which should never be taken for granted.
Still, in a game against the Cleveland Browns, certainly not the best matchup in the world for running backs, fans should be careful when putting him in their starting lineup.
Is David Montgomery a good pick in Week 2?
On the other hand, the Detroit Lions' RB was expected to share duties with Jahmyr Gibbs, but it became clear that he's the one who'll be pounding the rock more often due to his running style.
The Lions play the Buccaneers in Week 2, which should provide plenty of scoring opportunities. There's the obvious concern of Gibbs stealing carries inside the red zone, but based on Montgomery's game against the Rams in Week 1, these concerns can be eased – especially due to that overtime drive.
The Lions halfback put up 91 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries and certainly has a role to play in your team in Week 2.
Travis Etienne vs David Montgomery: Who should I start in Fantasy Football Week 9?
As unlikely as it may feel, starting Etienne might be your best bet for the upcoming week.
The Jaguars' offensive line isn't great, but the team will see plenty of passes to their running backs to avoid the Browns' pass rushers. More importantly, yes, Bigsby had a good game on Sunday, but there are no doubts about who leads this backfield.
For the Lions, the concerns about splitting carries with Gibbs and the lack of action in the passing game don't make him an exciting prospect to start unless he's the RB2 by default.
When comparing the two players directly, the Jaguars player has a higher ceiling and should be the starter in Week 2. Sportskeeda's Fantasy Start/Sit Optimizer also agrees with this analysis, giving Etienne a higher projection for Sunday.
