The salary cap in pro football is the maximum wage that restricts how much a franchise can expend on its players' wages. It can be used as a per-player limit, a total limit, or both.

The NFL wage cap reached a new threshold of $208.2 million in 2022. That represented a significant increase over the 2021 cap of $182 million. The increase has totaled at least $10 million every year since 2012.

Elite NFL players receive millions of dollars in compensation, making them some of the highest-paid athletes in the world.

None of these players are paid equally, though. As in any industry, some make the most money, while others make the least. Players that do not earn as much as others are frequently just as important to running the franchise. When other players aren't available or capable of the job, they step in and keep the group running.

Examining the lower end of the league's salaries is a little tricky. Players are subject to varying standard values depending on their contract and status as active or inactive players.

Special teams make the least money, with an average pay of $2.775 million. Running backs get the second-least amount of money among players.

The minimum wage in the NFL is determined by the powerful Collective Bargaining Agreement and is based on the number of years of professional experience a player has. A player would earn at least $660,000 if his rookie season began in 2021. This amount was $610,000 in 2020 and increased to $705,000 in 2022.

Who is the highest-paid NFL player?

Russell Wilson signed a five-year deal with the Denver Broncos last year, elevating him to the second-highest-paid player in the league. $165 million in guarantees are included in the contract's $245 million value.

Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers tops the list with a salary of $50.3 million annually. Defensive lineman Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams earns an average salary of $31.6 million a year, making him the best-paid non-quarterback in the league.

These are the top 5 highest paid players in the league as of the end of the 2022 season:

1. QB Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers - $50.3 million

2. QB Russell Wilson – Denver Broncos - $49 million

3. QB Kyler Murray – Arizona Cardinals - $46.1 million

4. QB Deshaun Watson – Cleveland Browns - $46 million
